The Top Three Restaurants in Phoenix

phoenix barbecue restaurant little miss

Last month marked my first visit to Phoenix, Arizona. I was visiting a friend who I have not seen in a while, and he was showing me all of the different cuisine that is offered in Phoenix. Phoenix is by no means  small town, so there were a lot of restaurants that we had to try. I was there for a week, after all. After returning, I am disappointed by the food in my hometown. So I’m going t reflect on the experiences I had in Arizona.

phoenix barbecue restaurant

The best restaurant that we tried was Little Miss BBQ. It was my friend’s personal favorite, so that had to mean something from the get-go. Also, I read a lot of the positive online reviews while we drove there and I was not disappointed. Little Miss BBQ is located near Rayburn Acres in Phoenix. The restaurant itself is only a block or two away from the Salt River, so if you’re into scenery then this is the place for you.

If you could find a bench, you could probably sit and eat your BBQ. My first impressions from he staff were good, as they greeted us with smiles. Although it was moderately busy, there were no issues getting a seat. It’s always nice to see a restaurant’s business flourishing, because that just means people like it. Once we were seated, there were no problems with our drink or food orders.

I wasn’t sure what to get because I’m kind of picky, but I was surprised at how many different options there were on the menu. There’s a different kind of barbequed meat for all people out there. Even if you’re jewish and can’t have pork. For those of you who are trying to eat healthier, Little Miss BBQ also serves turkey. Less fat in the meat. As we waited for our food, I made sure to take in the sights and atmosphere.

There’s no music blasting overhead, so this restaurant is already a few steps ahead of a certain Roadhouse named after a state. Little Miss BBQ has a very attractive interior, and the natural lighting from the windows really made it stand out. Nobody wants to be in a cold, damp cave. Unless they’re a bat, or a mushroom. My friend and I didn’t have to wait for very long before the food arrived, another pro to add to the list.

There wasn’t very much fat on the meat, even for pork. Brisket is either done really poorly at restaurants, or it is done very well. Little Miss BBQ’s meat falls into the latter category, which is likely why my friend likes it so much. One thing restaurant owners need to take into consideration when managing a BBQ restaurant is the kitchen’s level of grease. Grease is almost impossible to see as it evaporates, and only really appears once the kitchen’s grease trap catches it.

My friend works for some reliable restaurant hood cleaners in Phoenix, so I’m sure he as slipped the restaurant owner’s his number at some point. From what my friend told me, the business provides commercial kitchen equipment cleaning in addition to the standard hood cleaning. Might as well clean the other equipment while they’re already there, right?

He told me to read the about page if I was still curious about any other aspects of the business. I’ll have to do that sometime. There is not a doubt in my mind that Little Miss BBQ is the first restaurant I will visit upon returning to Phoenix. However, the other restaurants that I’m going to review do provide some stiff competition.

phoenix mexican restaurant

Next up, there’s El Chino Restaurante Y Cantina. I’m a sucker for good Mexican food, and the food from El Chino Restaurante Y Cantina is no exception. This time around, you will be eating in the warehouse district of Phoenix. There’s no problem with that, and it’s not terribly far away from the more residential areas of town. I don’t live in Phoenix though, so what would I know?

The staff here were also very friendly, and it’s hard for me to eat at restaurants with poor service now. Here, my friend and I both ordered the fish tacos. My mom introduced me to fish tacos when I was young, so it’s kind of a nostalgic thing for me. El Chino Restaurante Y Cantina has no shortage of great reviews, either. It’s a good thing that my friend didn’t just try to goof me and take me to bad restaurants, just to see if I would notice. The food here was excellent, and I’m not sure if I will be able to order anything else next time. Does ordering the fish tacos twice count as ordering another dish?

burgers and tacos in phoenix

Last but not least, the last Phoenix restaurant we ate at. This was one the final night, so I was expecting some sort of large final climactic dinner. There were no fireworks or tears, but the restaurant was still really great. The Dressing Room is located right in downtown Phoenix. Downtown Phoenix has so many different attractions that I can’t name them all. My friend and I saw a movie, so that’s one thing you can do.

There’s shopping and all sorts of other things as well. The Dressing Room specializes in both tacos and burgers, but I decided to order a burger since I had eaten fish tacos the previous night. Someone behind me had a churro ice cream sandwich, and that sounded really amazing. I didn’t have room after my burger, but next time I am definitely going to order it.

I ordered the RoRo burger, only because all of the amazing online reviews that I read praised it. The only dish that got anywhere near as many compliments was the burrito. Top-notch service and cleanliness added up as well, and it’s tough for me to decide exactly which restaurant in Phoenix is the best. On the plus side, that just means I have to keep coming back until I make a decision, right?

Denver’s Top Four Restaurants for Dining

denver bar cover photo

I have spent my whole life in Denver, so I’m pretty accustomed to the cuisine here. After trying basically every restaurant in town (I’m an adult), I decided to compile a list of all the restaurants that have caught my eye.

denver restaurant vesta

First of all, I have to talk about Vesta. It’s both a restaurant and a wine bar, so you probably shouldn’t bring the kids to this one. Vesta is located nearby Denver’s Lodo (lower downtown) neighborhood, perfect for walking around if you decide to take your food to go. There isn’t really a whole lot of outside scenery to look at while you walk, and I doubt you will after I explain how nice the interior of the restaurant is. If you really wanted to, you probably could, because all of the food is affordable.

I always love a restaurant that puts out quality food at a reasonable price, just looking out for regular people like you and me. Everyone’s been to that one restaurant where you can’t even afford to buy sodas they cost more than a regular meal anywhere else. You wouldn’t be able to tell Vesta apart from one of the highest-class restaurants in New York City upon entering, because if there’s one thing this restaurant gets right it is aesthetic. It’s really roomy overall, even during the busy times. I’m a little claustrophobic and don’t like being crowded as if I was eating at the dance floor of a nightclub.

In addition, the waiters are helpful for newcomers. They all recognize me as a regular, so the chefs always know what to make when I enter. That’s another thing I enjoy. When the chefs or wait staff recognize customers, it makes your dining experience more personal because they don’t just see you as numbers on a spreadsheet. I’m a sucker for small, family-owned restaurants, so if you are as well then definitely check out Vesta. Unsurprisingly, I left my thoughts in a great online review but there’s so many amazing reviews that I doubt you’ll find mine.

denver mexican restaurant colorado

Next up, if you like Latin food, I recommend eating at Candela Latin Kitchen. Found near Hirshorn Park in Denver, it’s a perfect little restaurant for taking your food to go and eating at the park. There’s a skate park in the other direction as well, if you’re on the younger side or still haven’t grown up yet. To this day, I still have a tough time deciding what my favorite item is on the menu. Guacamole fans will not be disappointed, because this restaurant offers some amazing plantain chips to go with theirs.

All of the ingredients just taste fresh, and if I don’t forget by the next time I stop by then I’ll ask the owner where he gets the ingredients from. Both the wait staff and the owners are very friendly and helpful, and the owner will act as a waiter whenever the restaurant gets swamped. It’s generally pretty busy during all times of the day, but there have been a few occasions where the waiters just couldn’t manage. In any time of need, the owner will step up to the plate. In my personal opinion, I think he’s actually the best waiter there.

Here’s a story about one of my experiences at Candela Latin Kitchen: one time I was eating with my friend who works for a Denver hood cleaning company, and he was looking to drum up business for any additional revenue he could find. I asked the owner if we could take a look at the kitchen, and my friend would give a free exhaust hood inspection. As friendly as the owner is, he was still a little apprehensive. After thinking about it for a minute, he agreed. Now Candela Latin Kitchen has a permanent friend in my friend’s Denver hood cleaning business. He and I both left good online reviews afterwards, which were definitely not influenced in any way.

denver chicken salad turtle

Turtle Boat has everything you would dream of in a Denver seafood restaurant: great food, great service, and great sanitation. This restaurant is found in the Overland neighborhood of Denver, which also includes some very green areas to walk around. Turtle Boat has a lot of windows that fill the restaurant with natural light, so I wouldn’t encourage anyone to leave unless their plate was clean.

I never know what to order because the menu has a lot of choices, so it’s kind of overwhelming at first. Luckily for me, the waiters always know what everyone is ordering and enjoying so they can offer plenty of suggestions. If you weren’t already into Poki bowls, I’m sure you will be by the time you leave. As for those who aren’t into seafood, you can still dine here. Turtle Boat offers plenty of alternatives for people who have allergies or just plain don’t like fish.

Don’t fret about ordering multiple dishes, because anything you can spot on the menu is affordably priced. I’ve brought the whole family here a few times after big events, and they loved it each time. A few of them left great reviews online, with no negative feedback. That’s how you know a restaurant is doing it right.

denver restaurant crepes

Last but not least, there’s Onefold. You might even say that I saved the best for last, if you’re into really good breakfast. This restaurant might be more of a cafe, because they specialize in breakfast and brunch. High-end breakfast and brunch, mind you. Onefold is just down the street from Denver’s City Park, so if you don’t mind a short little walk there’s plenty to look at while you walk around and eat.

You’ve never tasted tender belly bacon like this, with a side of scrambled eggs and hashbrowns. The hashbrowns here are killer, and sometimes in the morning when I’m too lazy to make breakfast I’ve thought about just coming to Onefold and only ordering their hashbrowns. Left a positive online review here after day one, and I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again.

The 13th amendment

In my History of the Americas class during freshman year, we watched a movie about the thirteenth amendment, simply titled “13th”. I would call it a “documentary”, but at least they tried. Participation medals are still a thing, right? For anyone who doesn’t know, the thirteenth amendment states “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” Essentially, you can’t be forced to do any work that you don’t want to, unless you’ve gone through due process.

The film begins by stating that slavery still exists in America. Not only do white people make blacks commit crimes and imprison them, but we also force them into manual labor after doing so. Supposedly this is, in effect, slavery. They just forget to stop and answer one question. Why are all of these people committing the crimes? Ben Shapiro has even provided us with the statistic that African Amercians only make up 13% of the population (ironic number), yet they commit 50% of the crime. Yes, if this was a debate, you could always play the victim card and say that they live in poor neighborhoods where they’re forced to commit crimes. Or you could even make the outrageous claim that white people just arrest blacks out of nowhere, and claim they were committing crimes.

The fact is, neither of those are true. Everything you do is a choice, no matter what. Fortunately, they didn’t use the standard argument of white privilege ruling over everything else. Out of all the people I know, only a few of them actually disagreed with the movie. Sadly, he moved away this school year. Maybe I can visit him after I move back to Reno, since he only lives in vegas. His family’s window tinting in las vegas business must be doing amazing if they can afford to move the whole family. Still, I don’t think we should have watched that in my class. It’s specious, I’ll give them that. Because of how well the documentary was put together (aside from all of the “facts”), it appears to be real. Juniors at a high school don’t  have access to that kind of information, so they all believe it’s real. If we put together a movie that completely disagreed with this one, but the only people who saw the film had never seen 13th, they would have a fundamentally different view.

The kinds of music that I’m into

Part of me feels like I’ve already covered this topic in another article, but it could just be that I’ve brought it up a few times without ever addressing it as the focal point. In any event, here’s a sole article dedicated to my interest in music. I’ve pretty much always liked all kinds of music, including small amounts of rap (to some degree). As I have grown older, I’ve gradually moved away from country and rap and started listening to more old music. Big band music from the 50s helps me focus when I’m working because there’s no lyrics. I was just recently talking about this with my friend in Miami. He uses music as a way to destress when he feels overwhelmed from his hood cleaning in miami business. I’d feel overwhelmed too, if I had that many clients on daily basis

White noise helps me a lot with focus, to the point where I can’t really sleep unless I have my fan running. I’m not sure what it is about music that helps me, I just know that it does. Most people from my school would  dislike all the music that I listen to, just from what I’ve heard them say about it. Music from the 1940s through now just sounds good to me. Rock from the 60s to the 80s is really good, and there’s some okay stuff in the 90s and early 2000s but now it’s all just alternative music like Nirvana which I don’t really care for. There are a few exceptions, like the Strokes and the Hives. They started out around the early 2000s, but their music is great. The Strokes are definitely the greatest modern rock band.

The Hives are okay, I just really like some of their songs. The rest of their songs are trash. They have a “high-energy” style, as they call it sometimes. It just means that they do really fast exciting music. I like listening to music that I like on a Walkman, because it just feels cool to have the technology. Plus my walkman only needs AA batteries, so I don’t have to charge it all the time. During the summer I was going to get some of my boss’s old 80s music tapes, but we couldn’t find any of them in his garage.

Garfield would be disappointed in me

Today wasn’t actually that bad, even for a monday. I slept in half an hour this morning, even though I’m still pretty exhausted.  The weather is supposed to be good this week. Even though it’s fall, the temperature was around the mid-70’s throughout the day.  My ASL teacher roasted the dumb freshmen in my class was pretty great. I hate them. We were assigned into groups today in my economics class, but that was okay because both of my friends in that class were absent. My english teacher from last year came and talked to us about the IB economics test, where we can get college credits.

He’s the IB coordinator now, so he doesn’t have his own classroom anymore. I’m not sure who they put in his old room. It’s probably just empty. We talked about a real topic in my english class today, which caught me completely off guard. And I was ready to have a good 70 minute nap. We discussed translation and then watched these videos where people translated through five different languages and then back into english. It’s like a game of telephone. At lunch, I sat next to my friend and we talked about what we were going to do after high school. He told me how much he loves working with pets, and started telling me about his plans to start a pet care business in Playa Vista.

I just told him that he’d have some stiff competition, because there’s already amazing dog boarding down there. The rest of lunch was pretty boring, because I had to work on my personal essay. It’s for my senior project class. We did the rough drafts last week, and I finished the final daft today during lunch. I forgot to double space it because the final draft was a separate document, so hopefully I can talk to my teacher about it. I’ll include the essay in my next post. It’s about my  greatest challenge, and overcoming my fears or something like that. Pretty interesting stuff. I don’t want to spoil any of the amazing details, but there’s a twist at the end

The different zodiac signs

I’m just going to assume that everyone who reads this article has also read our about page, which details info about me and my zodiac. I am a virgo, and I was born on September 19th. Typical virgo traits are being analytical, worrisome, and shy. I also share a birthday with Jimmy Fallon. My friend Joan (male) shares a birthday with Jimi Hendrix, which is November 27th. He’s a sagittarius, and they’re supposed to be extroverted and optimistic. Joan and I were actually talking this morning about what we were going to do once we graduated, and he told me that he might move to Las Vegas.

He said that he’s probably going to look into purchasing property so he can make an income from renting it out. Fortunately for him, I know of a place to go for Las Vegas Short-Term Rental Special Use Permits. Now all he has to do is move there, and he can start making money as soon as he gets there. I’m not sure why, but whenever I see something online that mentions a scorpio, it’s usually negative. My cousin Gabe is a scorpio, and he’s a pretty terrible person, so I guess that makes sense. His birthday’s on Halloween. Steph’s birthday is on July 15th, so she’s a cancer. They tend to be fragile and emotionally complex people. Lots of emotional stuff.

On the plus side, she’d make a good liberal. Since we’re on the subject of birthdays, my mom’s birthday is actually today. No joke. I’m gonna call her and wish her a happy birthday when I get home from the office. I sent her a card a week ago, but she never told me that she got it. Rebecca never did, either. We actually used to have a book with all of the zodiac signs and what they meant when I was a little kid. The book itself had a ton of information on astrology and other things, but I don’t really remember what the actual purpose of the book was. It was probably just some big encyclopedia-esque book that had a bunch of info on random stuff.
